Superwoman!

I mentioned Superwoman before and her great sacrifice during the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” and thought it would only be fair to show her first appearance in 1959 in Action Comics #252. As it turns out, her guest-starring role was the trial balloon for the character Supergirl, who appeared six months later. Since she was a time traveler, no one remembered her after she returned to her own time. This meant she could return to the 20^th Century “for the first time” on several occasions! Superwoman was Kristen Wells, a time traveler from the 29^th century. Some have described her as “the greatest hero of the 20^th Century!” but that is a controversial assertion; everyone must decide that issue for himself or herself. However, on more than one occasion her feats eclipsed those of even Superman!

In issue 5 of her own title, Superwoman defeats Superman’s greatest foe Lex Luthor ! In issue 7 you can see, Superman is not very pleased to get beaten to the punch once again! I believe she was a greater hero than Superman, at least for a time; perhaps you believe that too. Certainly while the fans may disagree about Superwoman, there’s no doubt that she’s left behind a rich legacy.
